The Mural Building: Howard Brown Health

Our June mural seeks to create a warm sense of togetherness, and reflect and celebrate the local community served by Howard Brown Health. In the artist’s own words, its creation was inspired by “the energy, history, and culture of the queer community and the multigenerational legacy of love and connection.”

Howard Brown Health’s mission since being founded in 1974 is to provide affirming healthcare and mobilize for social justice. With roots in LGBTQ+ liberation, the organization works to actualize human rights and equity for all through transformative social policies and healthcare. With a dual focus on individual well-being and community empowerment, Howard Brown welcomes all patients, regardless of identity or ability to pay at various locations throughout Chicago.

The number of patients Howard Brown Health serves is projected to grow by 15,000 individuals within the next five years, adding to a patient volume that more than doubled between 2016 and 2020. To grow with this demand and continue its high-quality, equitable services, Howard Brown has launched the “We Care” initiative to establish three new locations between 2020 and 2025.

  • The first of these locations, which is now open, is the Broadway Youth Center, developed to be a newer, larger version of its predecessor and serve local LGBTQ+ youth.
  • The second location, projected to open in December 2023, is an expanded, relocated North Halsted clinic, which will provide critical HIV/STI services to patients on the North Side.
  • A new clinic-anchored community center on the South Side will be open to serve patients starting December 2025, answering the ever-growing demand for Howard Brown’s accessible, affirming healthcare and support.

Wintrust is proud to have been a donor to Howard Brown Health since 2019, and is happy to help support both the important work done in the past, and the exciting changes Howard Brown has planned for the future.
